Sure is time for Tommy Emmanuel here on Nullary Sources. From a live show in Shanghai, China on October 15, here’s Tommy playing a medley of Beatles songs, and then Mason Williams’s “Classical Gas.”
I love how absolutely hyped the audience gets about “Classical Gas,” going so far as to scream the melody. They are getting this excited about a solo guitar piece.
During the show “Guitarology 101” in 2010, guitarist Randy Bachman told the story of how George Martin’s son invited him to Abbey Road Studios to listen to original Beatles recordings. He chose to listen to the individual instrument tracks that went into the opening chord of “A Hard Day’s Night” and explained what he heard.
The video is kind of cool, but I’m mostly linking this because there are apparently vitriolic arguments over this chord. I found this video through the writeup on Open Culture, and the comments are full of people saying Bachman is wrong and giving their own explanations, all of which are different. Like this fellow:
Noooo! all wrong completely. My mother , a Professor of Music worked with me on getting that chord immediately after getting the record in 64 and we played it that way always.Basically F6 triad with wrap over G muting A and open D on 12 string guitar. D7 sus4 played on 3rd fret for rhythm,Bass D+ Doctave played with plectrum,Strike on bell of large cymbal and hi tom rim shot. Piano is low chord same as 12 string chord with hi Dsus + F note. That,s it. Ending run out is F6 to F triad picked in arpeggio! So the sum of ‘THE CHORD’ is based around a D sus Chord and as D is the 5th, and dominant note of the G tonic scale it all makes sense. I play 26 instruments and have played since 1957 sooooo!??
He’s a darling.
Recess Art exhibition info:
On January 7, 2013, Rutherford Chang will begin work on We Buy White Albums, as part of Recess’ signature program, Session. Session invites artists to use Recess’ public space as studio, exhibition venue, and grounds for experimaentation. Pursuing an interest in exhaustive cataloguing, Chang has collected over 650 first-pressings of the Beatles’ White Album. He considers the serialized first-press, an edition running in excess of 3 million, to be the ultimate collector’s item, and aims to amass as many copies as possible. Over the course of his Session, Chang will create an archive, listening library, and anti-store to house and grow his collection of the Beatles’ iconic record.
There’s a video tour of the installation on Vimeo that unfortunately doesn’t have embedding enabled, so all I can do is link to it.
So I was listening to KINE Hawaiian 105’s web stream, like you do, and this gorgeous (and new to me) medley of The Beatles’ “In My Life” and “For No One” by Jon & Randy came on. I know you guys are gonna love this.
Mariachi Cabos perform “Another Brick in the Wall (part 2)” by Pink Floyd. They’ve got a number of other gems on their Youtube channel including “Beat It” and “She Loves You”. Perfect.
